Oprah’s Angel Network
and Free the Children

Oprah joined together with Free The Children after she met Craig Keilburger. Craig is the head of the organization Free the Children. He has been fighting for children’s rights since he was 12 years old. Craig first appeared on Oprah when he was 16 years old.

Since the two remarkable people have joined together for this excellent cause they have built 60 schools in underdeveloped countries around the world, providing education to over 2500 kids. They have done this by creating a group titled O ambassadors. O ambassadors is a school based program present all across North America and in all ten provinces and two territories in Canada.

The latest project that the O ambassadors have completed was the building of a school in Kenya. 12 students went to Africa after countless hours of fundraising. They met with children and provided them with a school and supplies for them to gain an education.

Throughout Oprah’s site there are several videos of the student’s trips. They make you very thankful for what we have here in Canada.

Watch the O ambassador's Journey to Kenya here :

http://www.oprah.com/oprahshow/Watch-the-O-Ambassadorss-Journey-in-KenyaThe Story of Free The Children

Craig Keilburger was 12 years old in ’95 and was searching through the Toronto newspaper- Yes he is CANADIAN! One headliner caught his attention and he began to read on down the page the story of Iqbal Masih.

This young boy was born in South Africa and sold into slavery when he was of age four. Iqbal was chained to a carpet weaving loom for six years of his life. He died at age 12. His death came about when he was fighting to defend the rights of children.

Craig knew he had to help and he didn’t waste time. He gathered together 11 of his fellow classmates – grade 7 at this time- and the new organization was founded. Craig based his organization on these three things:

• Free the children from poverty

• Free the children from exploitation

• Free the children from the notion that they are powerless to affect change.

Craig has been very successful as FTC is the largest network of children helping children through education and it has developed programs currently in over 45 countries.

Where does the Angel Network come in??

Oprah became involved with Free the Children after Craig appeared on her show in ’99. Oprah was moved by the passion Craig had for the charity and to help children all around the world. Oprah believes that an education is the door to freedom and an education will change everything. Oprah pledged Free the Children and initiated the start of the O ambassadors group. Oprah helps them fundraise to build schools in underdeveloped countries.

Oprah along with Craig are both very fond of and proud of the success they have had with the O ambassadors. This year Free the Children is taking one hundred percent responsibility of O ambassadors because Oprah is so impressed with the management from Free the Children and the success that the organization has accomplished.

Who’s That Girl?!             Blog Assignment #2

Blog assignment two for the finalists of the pageant is asking me what TV Show I would want to be the star of.

                                                            MISS TEEN EXTREME

Miss Teen Extreme ;) would feature Sarah Rickard (Myself) and as many different extreme sports as I could fit into the programming. It would be a one hour television show with three different sports featured in each episode. An example of one episode could be Snow X, Nascar and Moto X. I would go through all the aspects of the sport for people whom don’t know anything about it. I would feature special guest such as Jimmy Johnson and Danika Patrick, Jeremy McGrath, Carmichael and Chad Reed. With their help and a mechanic’s I would go through the pros and cons of each make of bike or car in this case. This show appeals to me so much because it means that I would get to play all day with trucks, cars, bikes, go-karts, quads, paint-ball guns, boats, wake-boards and so on.

This show would be made possible thanks to two major sponsors.

The first one being Faze Media. Faze Media is all about advertising for Canadian Teens. It is based out of Toronto Ontario and is directly aimed at youth. They would be my major sponsor as they are in charge of all media productions. How can you have a T.V. show without media?

The next major sponsor would be Jergens. Jergens is famous for its soaps and skin cleansers. After a long day of mud bogging, paintballing or dirt biking everyone will need a little bit of soap to keep themselves clean. Jergens would be put to use well in this TV series.

My goal for this show is to teach everyone the basics of each sport. Some people have no idea how to ride a dirt bike – these needs to be changed. I want to encourage all people to try something new, and feel that thrill that you get from one of these different sports. Many say Nascar isn’t a sport and Moto –X isn’t a sport. Sport is defined as an activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature. (Thanks to Dictionary.com) Well who can honestly say these aren’t sports; they require skill, and you don’t know how much physical exertion is included until you try it – in my opinion many of these sports require very good physical shape. So I want to familiarize people with these sports, these sports that aren’t basketball, volleyball, track and hockey but the more extreme sports.

Have a great day everyone. I fly out on Wednesday this week!

We'll throw a little bit of country in here.

Check out Emotional Girl by Terri Clark, she's a crazy, famous CANADIAN Country singer ;)

Miranda Lambert's new song- The House that Built Me

This song is originally sang by the legendary Dolly Parton. One day I was watching Opera home sick from school with Mom and Opera had a special show on where she granted one of Shania Twain's wishes. Shania's favorite all time song was Coat of Many Colors by Dolly Parton. Dolly Parton was also Shania's biggest influence on her singing career. Shania Twain was my favorite singer when i was younger so here you go guys-

Coat of Many Colors, Shania Twain and Dolly Parton

This next song is by the famous and soo beautiful Carrie Underwood. This song encourages me to keep going.

Play On , Carrie Underwood

Carrie Underwood also wrote a few of  my other favorite songs such as:

Temporary Home

Wasted

Quitter

and The More Boys I meet

-- So i like Carrie Underwood ;)

Where Am I? -- blog assignment one

Fri, June 18, 2010 - 10:39AM 4 Comments

Hey everyone, I just got home from one of the craziest days of my life. I finished grade twelve, and all of my schooling for that matter. It seems pretty crazy that everything that the last fifteen years has led up to is over next Friday (Kindergarten, 2 yrs of pre-school). I think Friday is going to be an emotional day, there will probably be lots of tears of happiness yet tears of sorrow that I may not see some of the people I’ve been with for the last two years- ever again. I’m not going far though. I am staying right close to home in Brandon Manitoba with my best friend Rhyleigh. That’s right I’ve only been with this class for two years, but I have made some memories, good and bad. I’ve made friendships that will last a life time and grew very close to a few people. Everyone has a story. Here is mine. On November 26th 1992 I was born in Melita Manitoba. We lived ten minutes from Melita in Waskada Manitoba. Not very many people have heard of this town. It is very small, way smaller than Toronto or Winnipeg. It consists of about 250 people on a good day. I lived in Waskada for six years- until grade one. Some fun facts about waskada – They have this huge party every four years in July called border fest. We’ve missed a few, but my family’s been going to them as long as I can remember. Waskada is 40 km from the Saskatchwan border and 10 km from the US border. This town is the definition of the slogan on Manitoban license plates since ’75. Friendly Manitoba. Everyone there knows everyone and generally everyone there gets along with everyone. Everyone one there knows who I am whenever I go back, whether its through my dad, mom, older brother, grandmother or grandfather they know who I am. I still call waskada home and tend to confuse many people with my three different homes. I live in oil country and always have. From Waskada we went to Arcola Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan’s license plates aren’t nearly as cool as Manitoba’s, but… Saskatchwan does have the Roughriders! Arcola is a town consisting of about four hundred people. So twice the size of Waskada. No I don’t understand football well, not going to lie to you at all about that but I do cheer for the Riders. My bestie in Sask is a die-hard rider fan. Nikki is crazy for her riders. Some of the pictures I’ve seen of her at the games show her dedication. She has season tickets every year her whole family is famous for being Rider fans.

Arcola Saskatchewan came about in the 1900’s when the CPR was being built. Arcola’s landmark used to be the oil derrick, you could see it half way to arcola from Carlyle. This is my church in Arcola it was built in 1903 It’s the United church, it looks really big in this photo Now behind the church there is more trees and a back alley with lots of houses and more trees. Across from the church in the bottom left corner is the playground now. It has a large play structure and a few new toys to play with. When we were little there were these cement cylanders that were there for us kids to crawl through. They were lots of fun until we were about seven or eight and nikki was running on top of them and slipped and fell cutting her cheek open. I’m sure anyone who is in my class in Arcola will remember seeing nikki with the stitches in her face at school the next day.

This photo to the right is the old town hall. It is now known as the “High House” or Buddy’s Pub. It sits on the corner of Main Street in Arcola. It is one of the three bars in Arcola. This Bar is home to the longest bar in Saskatchewan. The inside of all these old buildings are amazing they all have the gorgeous dark brown wood and they all are kept well. This place here in the picture to the right has the best wings in Canada- in my opinion. There are like fifteen different kinds to choose from! Minors are only allowed up there until 8:00, but you can always order out if your looking for a late night snack. Try the teriyaki wings or the buffalo wings!

Arcola had a movie filmed in it titled Who Has Seen The Wind, based on the novel by W.O. Mitchell. We’ve all seen it a few times, part of the movie was filmed in one of my friends houses. It was always neat to sit there, watch the movie and pick out all the places you’ve been and seen.

My school, and one of my father's buildings was on the movie!

Arcola is known as “ The Heritage Town”. There is a lot of heritage to it as you can tell. The grad class of 2010 in arcola this year’s theme was History in the Making. I think this theme is perfect. We did make history. Every thing in this town has some sort of story to it. Just like you and I do. I remember in grade four when the rink burnt down. The whole town was devastated. We all got together and raised money for the new rink. We now have one of the best rinks in Sask in my opinion, along with the best hockey team! ;) The Arcola- Kisbey Combines! This is our local hockey team. The games are amazing. Everyone is always in attendance. Us kids planned everything around the hockey games. If there was a hockey game the night someone wanted to have a birthday party- the party was postponed. I love hockey. For three years, I had every team members name memorized and knew all their stats. Since I moved away I couldn’t tell you exactly who was on the team, but I bet you that Mickey and Cody- our famous Grimes boys and the none other than Arcola’s own, Mathew Wheeler are on that roster. I believe my own age group is starting to fall into this league too. Sheldon has been playing hockey with them for a few years now.

There are a few cool things in this area you must attend! The Kenosee Superslides! The Superslides have ten different waterslides along with the massive hot tub and the lazy canal. It’s open all summer long and definitely worth the trip. The lines are short and move quickly. However- be sure to take sunscreen, as I have never successfully walked out of these gates without a sunburn and make sure you can close your cooler and hide anything that seagulls might eat. There are lots of seagulls here. Another place that kenosee is famous for is the Moose Head Inn. The Moose Head Inn has a story that is published in the collection Ghost Stories of Canada, Ghost Stories of Saskatchewan titled –Kenosee. The story is that the people that used to own the Moose Head were very fond of the way it was set up. When the new owners came in they switched some things around. According to the story ever since they switched stuff around people have witnessed things slamming, pictures falling, things going missing ect. The authors of the Ghost Stories of Canada claim this is one of the spookier ghost stories in Canada. In January of 2009 I moved from this home to my new home. Oak Lake Beach Manitoba.

Oak Lake Beach is now titled Four Seasons Island Resort and guys, I am living the life! 70 steps east of my doorstep is a professionally designed, 18 hole golf course. There is a beach, a lake, a marina, a store, a campground and an ice cream store. The stories here are never ending. We bought this cabin in grade six. So, six years ago.  I get to wake up to this sight every morning..It's a little cloudy in this picture though.  Its even smaller than Waskada! Here’s a kicker for you guys- guess the population here. There are only about 60 people that live out here all year around like I do. That’s people in total- not families. I live here and go to school in Virden Manitoba. This is my school! However I am graduating next Friday from here. I recommend to anyone to take a hike out here, to the lake for a relaxing get-a-way. If you like golfing and you are in Manitoba we have the best golf course in Manitoba! Remember that old cheez whiz commercial—You know ya wannnnna! Here at the lake we are about an hour from Asessippi Ski Hill. That ski hill has caused me a few problems over the year such as a broken arm and problematic knee but I still love that place. Asessippi has 25 Downhill runs - beginner to expert, one quad & two triple chair lift, board & boot rentals, Snowbike rentals, Group & private lessons. Free style lessons. Cross Country Skiing. Inside the village there is....Pizza Hut, Express KFC, Express Asessippi Grill, Tokyo Sushi, Powder Keg Pub. Banquet & Conference rooms, Trails End Gift Shop. The fun doesn’t end in the spring though. Asessippi runs in the summer too. They have, River Tubing, Kayak Rentals, Paint Ball, hike / Bike Trails, and Dinner in the Valley. It is an all around awesome place and anyone who enjoys sports or anything like that will love it there.

My favourite place in the world is here at the lake. Next Friday I’m getting my grad pictures taken there with my friends. It’s called the lookout tower. It’s a tower down this old closed road on the way to the dam that connects Oak Lake and Plum Lake. The tower is a seeing tower where people are to be able to see all the lakes surrounding the island and view all the birds an wildlife in the area. I have lots of memories from this place and they’re all good ones. Like the time all the guys and Amanda and I decided to cruise out there late late one night after a lot of rain. We got stuck really badly at 2:30 in the morning and none of us wanted to call our parents. We had lots of scares, we had all just watched the movie Wrong Turn and it wasn’t doing us any good in the dark in a field on a back road. There was one summer a few years back after my father brought home a golf cart that we went out to the dam just about everyday in the golf cart. The Golf Cart was electric and we made sure it was fully charged every time but one. Well that one time was a long trip home. The first time we had possession of the cabin in grade six, my mom had bought shawn ( little Brother) those flimsy, plastic kites. We walked down to that road and we both flew our kites while running down that road- as there was no wind that day.

In closing, all my homes are homes for a reason. Waskada is home because that’s where I first called home. My first memories are there and there are lots of them. Arcola is home because I grew up and developed there. I am who I am because of those people and what they did for me and asked of me. As for here at the lake, this is home right now. It’s one of my most favourite places in the world. I have a different group of friends to associate with each place and a different scene, different hobbies, different lifestyle. The house I lived in, in Waskada and in Saskatchewan is the same house. It moved with us. That house is my home and always will be. Here in Oak Lake this home is the home away from home. It’s my cottage, my cabin, but it is my home.

Home is defined as; the place that one’s domestic affections are centered. I have so many memories in that house it combines both Arcola and Waskada. Pretty soon I’ll have a new home, right after the pageant actually. It’ll be another temporary home. Another, “home away from home.”

Remember these key places : Waskada Manitoba—Small but mighty,  Arcola Saskatchewan –History town!  Kenosee Saskatchewan –Moosehead Inn, Kenosee Saskatchewan –Kenosee Superslides,  Oak Lake Beach –Four Season’s Island Resort—Golf Course,  Russel Manitoba –Asessippi Ski Hill and resort Oak Lake Beach –Look out tower, dam road.

Do you guys have a favourite place? Does a memory associate with that favourite place like all mine? Where are you guys right now? What’s your definition of home?

Sarah Rickard

P.s. Don’t forget the fundraiser this Saturday at the lake!

Checkin In!

Hey everyone! So i am done my first exam-- it was four days long! I wrote it last week, it was the English provincial exam. Now i have one more exam next Thursday then i am done high school. Grad is in 13 days... that is crazy. I remember counting down from two hundred days. I am going to have a fun grad week- On the Wednesday i have to go to Deloraine for their grad to watch and support a few of my friends while they graduate, then it's on to Waskada to watch my old classmates and preschool buddies graduate, then back here to Virden to graduate myself! It’s going to be three very late nights and a very tired girl on Saturday, but i know it will be worth it and i wouldn't miss any of them for the world. Girl guides is done now. Our weekly meetings are over. At the end of the year we have a potluck supper and invite all the girls’ family and friends to come and watch us get our final awards. After Eleven years of Brownies, Guides, Pathfinders, Junior Leaders and Rangers i have received every award you can except- the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Which sucks... but i can still get it i have until i am twenty one and i am only 17. Girl Guides of Canada are going to pay for my flight to Ontario. I am going down early a few days before the pageant to partake in an international Girl Guide camp at Guelf Lake. I think it will be a wonderful experience. They are going to include me in part of the opening ceremonies with my sash and crown! Below are some pictures from the Girl Guide Wind up!

This is Fran, my Girl Guide leader and second mother; she is presenting me with my Gold Chief Commissioners award one of the highest ranked awards in Rangers. ;)

These are my girls! I spend every Tuesday evening with this group. Fran is holding a picture frame we gave to her with her name and 30 years of guiding engraved in the bottom of the frame.

Fran's 30 years of guiding cake and group photo. One of her many going away presents.

We wanted a group photo to put up around town with my sash and crown on so here it is! Virden Pathfinders and Rangers First Unit!

These two ladies are two of the most important Ladies in my life. Jo to the left and Shelly to the Right. Shelly has led Girl Guides and taught me for many years while Jo is one of our next door neighbours at home and has always found some way to spoil me. She is part of the family and took on the name Grandma Jo. I love you both so much. Mom and dad didn't email me a photo of them to put up from the Girl Guide ceremony so i guess that photo will have to be left out.

Prom also took place a few days ago. During the time i haven't been blogging I have been a very busy girl. Prom was very good. It was well set up and organized and the girls did a great job with it! I have only one photo right now from prom; it’s the Grade twelve class prom photo. This isn't nearly all of us but here is a few of us. I wore the gown that i wore in the Manitoba pageant. As you can tell, we all had a lot of fun! See if you can pick me out in all these crazies!

Yesterday i spent the day in my first photo shoot! It was so much fun! Keywest Photo in Brandon is sponsoring me with all the photos. It was cool because i did gown photos, then i did some tank and jeans then i did Oilers!!! I never got to see too many of them but I’m pretty stoked to see the Edmonton Oilers photos. I had my jersey, scarf, hat and hockey gloves on in the photos. Barry (The Photographer) is all about displaying you in the pictures so there was lots of relaxed and fun photos. I can't wait to post them on here for you guys!

Anyhow, it is breakfast time for this girl! Dipsticks scratching at the door so i should probably let him in too. He spends ALL his time outside these days-- even in all the rain we've had. It is sunny today, thank goodness! The Free the Children fundraiser is set to go next Saturday! Hope to see you there! I'm on my way in search of sponsors today :) Have a great weekend everyone!

May Long Weekend

Mon, May 24, 2010 - 4:08PM 5 Comments

Alright guys, so it's been a while since the last post but I have a valid excuse! The town I used to live in holds their graduation on the friday of the May Long every year. My class of fifteen students that i was with for the 11 yrs graduated on friday! (CONGRATS GUYS!) My May Long weekend started really early this year. On Thursday night I drove back to Saskatchewan to my parents house. It was a late night with the driving, I didn't get off work until ten then drove for an hour and a half home. Friday Morning I was ready to go. I got into my dress and did my hair. My dad took my car out to the shop to change the winter tires to summer tires while I was getting ready. When I went out to the shop to pick up my car, I discovered he wasn't done with my car yet.  So I helped Dad change tires and work on my car in a little dress, all dolled up, I'm sure it was quite the site to see.  Graduation was amazing, all the girls looked so beautiful. Nikki's dress was a gorgeous purple and she looked like a princess.Madison's was elegant and slim fitting. She was beautiful. Shelbey's dress reminded me of spring, it was white with pink flowers while Alina's was a beautiful blue that also made her look like a princess. Brandi and Chelsea also looked stunning. Brandi's dress was black with blue bead work, while Chelsea's was a peachy colour with bead work. Ruth's dress was perfect for her, it was simple yet elegant. All of the boys looked handsome. I am so glad i was there and thanks for the invite! After grad the class and all of our friends spent the night together at one of the farms in the area. Saturday came along and I said goodbye to my Saskatchewan friends and hello to my Manitoban friends! I drove to Deloraine to see some friends and my grandmother, grandfather, cousins and my great uncle and aunty. Saturday night was my lazy night of the long weekend, we sat around and watched movies. Sunday was the most fun part of the weekend! Amanda, Tony, David, Cory, Cody, Aly, Amanda and I all went mud bogging up in the hills by Deloraine. We had lots of fun, and I have pictures to follow! After mud boggin, I made my way home too the lake. I got to spend time with old friends and new ones too! As for today, I'm starting to feel the effects of the weekend. I'm way over tired, but it was totally worth it. As for the Miss Teen stuff, today mom and I have made a whole bunch of posters and Brochures for people in our area. We are planning to hold a "Kiddie Carnival" and bake sale to raise money for the charity. I'm very excited for the carnival and am happy with the plans we've made so far!

Photos from Mud Boggin in Deloraine!

So we got a 'lil dirty, but we had so much fun, and it was totally worth the pair of jeans and the sweater. Happy May Long Everyone!

So every few day's I will add a few songs on to the list.

Perfect by my favourite band Hedley, is also a good one to listen to right now, it's making it's way up the Much Music charts.

Young and Stupid is also another song by Hedley thats pretty good! :)

Last but not least, Scream by Hedley is what i am listening to right now.
